Caravan Driving License

A caravan is a portable living space, either towed or mounted on a motor vehicle, designed for various purposes. With the harmonization of driving license regulations in line with the European Union, the concept of a “caravan driving license” has been introduced.

The required license class for towing a caravan depends on the type of the towing vehicle:

  • If towed by a Category B vehicle → BE license
  • If towed by a Category C vehicle (truck) → CE license
  • If towed by a Category D vehicle (bus) → DE license

In Turkey, since caravans are usually towed by Category B vehicles, the term “caravan license” typically refers to a BE license. (For motorhomes, the required license depends on the vehicle’s loaded weight and may fall under truck, minibus, or other relevant license categories.)

What is a BE Category License?

BE license is required to tow a trailer or caravan weighing over 750 kg with a Category B vehicle. Drivers with a BE license can travel on both urban and intercity roads with their caravan or trailer.

Trailer License Rules

  • Trailers under 750 kg can be towed without an additional BE/CE/DE license.
  • For trailers over 750 kg:
    • If using a Category B car → BE license
    • If using a Category C truck → CE license
    • If using a Category D bus → DE license

Do I Need a BE Category License?

If you plan to tow a caravan or trailer exceeding 750 kg, you must obtain a BE license.

If you obtained an E-category license before 1997 or held the old D-category (truck) license, you are automatically eligible for BE towing rights without needing an additional exam.

Check your new-style license card to see if you already have BE authorization.
